Bikeability Programme
Bikeability is the Cycling Proficiency Test for the 21st century, designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.
To get their Bikeability award, young people from school years 5, 6 and 7 are taught how to ride their bikes to the Government approved National Standard for Cycle Training, which sets out the training and skills essential for making cycling trips in today’s road conditions. By establishing a National Standard, the Government has set out a nationwide uniform programme of formal training which will reassure parents that young people wanting to cycle have been instructed in the essential skills and procedures wherever they may live in England.
Exeter School Sport Partnership has been successful in securing funding to deliver the Bikeability project locally, working closely with the Cycle Exeter team to deliver courses to young people across the partnership. This project aims to:
  • Increase the number of young people travelling to school by bike (evidenced through the Fit to Succeed Survey)
  • Increase the number of schools accessing the Devon County Council Travelwise Award (evidenced via DCC)
  • Increase the number of young people engaged in Daily Physical Activity (evidenced by the Fit to Succeed Survey and PESSYP Survey)
In addition to delivering sessions for young people we are offering places on Bikeability Tutor Training courses for members of staff that would be interested in continuing to deliver Bikeability training within their school.
